Writing Tip of the Week: Your Story Can Evolve

One of the quiet fears we hear from women in our community is this: What if I’ve already told this story and I tell it differently now?

As if changing the way you speak about your past somehow invalidates the version you once shared.

We’ve felt that tension ourselves.

There are stories we told years ago that we would write very differently today—not because they were wrong, but because we’ve changed. At the time, we told them from a place of survival, or striving, or needing to be understood in a particular way. We emphasized certain moments. We skipped over others. We shaped the story to fit who we were trying to be then.

Looking back now, we don’t judge those versions. We thank them.

Those earlier iterations carried us forward. But growth has given us new language, more compassion, and a wider lens. We notice patterns we couldn’t see before. We understand motivations, ours and others’, with more nuance. The emotional center of the story shifts.

That doesn’t mean the story is unstable. It means it’s alive.

Your story is not a static artifact. It’s a living narrative that deepens as you do. Each retelling isn’t a contradiction. It’s a conversation between who you were and who you are now.

When you allow your storytelling to evolve alongside you, you’re not rewriting history. You’re honoring it with greater honesty and care.

Storytelling tips to guide your writing:

1.     Revisit old stories from your current perspective.

2.     Notice what you understand now that you didn’t then.

3.     Let your story reflect who you are today—not who you were trying to be.

Growth doesn’t erase your past—it deepens its meaning.
