Writing Tip of the Week: You’re Allowed to Take Your Time

In a culture that rewards urgency, storytelling can start to feel like something you’re falling behind on. As if there’s an invisible clock ticking, telling you that you should have written this by now, shared it already, moved on to the next thing.

We’ve felt that pressure ourselves.

There were stories we rushed because we thought timing mattered more than readiness. And there were others we avoided because we assumed we needed more clarity, more distance, or more courage before we could touch them. What experience has taught us is this: stories unfold on their own timeline and forcing them rarely serves anyone.

Some stories need space before they make sense. Others need to be written imperfectly, set aside, and returned to with kinder eyes. Clarity isn’t something you muscle your way into. It arrives when there’s room for it.

Taking your time isn’t procrastination. It’s respect for yourself and for the story you’re carrying.

When you honor your own pace, you write from a grounded place instead of a pressured one. And that steadiness shows up on the page. Readers can feel when a story has been allowed to breathe.

Your story isn’t going anywhere. It will meet you when you’re ready and it will be better for the wait.

Storytelling tips to guide your writing:

1.     Let stories rest before revisiting them.

2.     Write imperfectly first. Clarity comes later.

3.     Honor your own pace and capacity.

Your story isn’t going anywhere. You’re allowed to meet it when you’re ready.
