Writing Tip of the Week: Stories Build Trust

Hi Passionistas —
It’s tempting to believe that trust is built by having everything figured out. By sounding confident. By presenting a clean, polished version of the journey once you’ve reached the other side.
We used to think that, too.
Early on, when we talked about our work or shared our story, we focused on what had gone right. We smoothed over the uncertainty. We skipped the moments when we weren’t sure what the next step was or whether we were even on the right path. We thought that was what people wanted to hear.
But over time, we noticed something unexpected. The moments that resonated most weren’t the wins. They were the pauses. The questions. The places where we admitted we were figuring it out in real time.
People didn’t lean in because we sounded accomplished. They leaned in because we sounded human.
Stories don’t build trust by showcasing perfection. They build trust by revealing process. When you allow someone to see what you didn’t know yet, what you were wrestling with, or where you hesitated, you invite them into the journey instead of asking them to admire it from a distance.
Trust grows when readers feel like you’re walking beside them… not standing far ahead, pointing the way.
And the truth is, you don’t lose authority by sharing uncertainty. You gain credibility by being honest about how learning actually happens.
Storytelling tips to guide your writing:
1. Share moments of uncertainty, not just confidence.
2. Be honest about what you didn’t know yet.
3. Let your story show learning in progress.
Trust grows when readers feel like you’re walking beside them, not ahead of them.
