There's nothing like having a good book to read on a hot summer day so we chose Billie Best's uplifting memoir on conquering the modern midlife crisis, How I Made a Huge Mess of My Life (or Couples Therapy with a Dead Man). Three months before her husband's death, he invites his mistress to spend the weekend with them. It doesn't go well, and the emotional scars are permanent, triggering a cascade of rage, neurosis and obsessive-compulsive cleaning. Billie Best writes the blog Beyond 60 — Loving Life, Staying Relevant. She was born in 1954 in Illinois and spent most of her childhood in rural farm country. Billie became a city girl in 1972 when she moved to Chicago, then on to New York City and Boston where her career traversed waitressing, the music business, retail and marketing communications. In 1999, she moved back to the country and lived on a farm in Massachusetts. Billie took off for the city again in 2017, landing in Portland, Oregon, where she began to write as if her life depended on it.
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of each Passionistas Project Pack will be donated
to a charity. This quarter Billie Best has chosen Oregon Tradeswomen.
Oregon Tradeswomen promotes success for women in the trades through education, leadership and mentorship. They were founded in 1989 on the principles that women deserve and can attain economic self-sufficiency by pursuing careers in the construction, manufacturing, mechanical and utility trades while helping and encouraging the trades industry to build a diverse workforce. Twenty-nine years strong, Oregon Tradeswomen offers innovative trades-based training programs, trades awareness activities and technical assistance to organizations seeking to be inclusive of women in their trade occupations. They offer professional and leadership development for tradeswomen, promote the skilled trades as a highly desirable career path for women and girls and have earned the respect and support of trades industry employers. Respect, excellence, equity, community and empowerment are the values reflected in all of their programs and services.
“I support Oregon Tradeswomen because it prepares women for success in occupations that
provide long-term economic self-sufficiency. With education, leadership and mentorship, women
are strong candidates for jobs in construction, manufacturing, mechanical and utility trades.
Oregon Tradeswoman creates opportunities for women to earn and excel in highly desirable
career paths so they can provide for themselves and their families.” — BILLIE BEST, AUTHOR
